Vintage Valentine Fifties Frock

My love of retro holiday-themed fabric prints is a pretty well documented phenomenon around these parts. I am always a little sad when the Christmas season is over but fortunately we have Valentine’s Day as a consolation. This vintage-Valentine-themed fabric is one of my favorites ever (and even made an appearance in my Etsy shop in the pre-Kindred Thread days). I bought up every inch of it at Hobby Lobby last year and have been carefully hoarding it ever since. Look closely at all the little Valentine’s images… you will even see a skunk!

Because my other addiction is 1950s-style sewing (fingers crossed for a Fifties historical!) I have made a dress adapted from a Chatty Cathy pattern dated 1952. I have showcased a somewhat busy print with a style that is simple and un-fussy yet sweetly feminine. The bodice is shaped with darts in both front or back (you can see why this is my go-to pattern… how often do you see darts in doll clothing?) with a slightly dropped waistline. The wide, scooped neckline flatters your doll’s face and is finished with a scalloped row of black cotton rick-rack. Short puffed sleeves are gathered to wide sleeve cuffs and the waistline is trimmed with yet more rickrack before giving way to the girliest of full skirts. For a classic Fifties look, I highly recommend pairing this dainty frock with our Fluffy Petticoat, sold separately.
