Felicity’s School Jacket has long been on my sewing bucket list – it was just a matter of finding the right material. I found the perfect match with French General’s Pondicherry line – this brand has long been my go-to for doll-scaled 18th-century prints. And because the floral print is available in multiple colorways, I decided to make an outfit for Elizabeth as well. She never wears one in the book, but I do so love to dress friend dolls in matching ensembles!

The jacket is made from the original 1990s Pleasant Company sewing patterns, and it’s a lot more complicated than it appears at first glance – fourteen separate pieces, not including the ruffles! Most of the complexity is due to the seams on the back, which create historical accuracy and visual interest. The jacket back features a cut-in-one peplum for a fashionable ‘swallowtail’ look (for more examples of 18th century swallowtail jackets, check out our Pinterest board!) Elbow-length sleeves are trimmed with ruffles and gathered with most of the fullness concentrated towards the back for another 18th century touch. The jacket front features a tabbed hem to spread out over the skirts and an eyelet laced closure. The pleated petticoat may be worn with a bum roll (not included) and ties at the waist with ribbons. (I was surprised to learn that I’ve been tying 18th century petticoats incorrectly all these years – you don’t tie the ribbons at the sides, you actually wrap them around! See here for a more detailed explanation.) To create the look shown on Lissie’s book cover, you may choose to add a mob cap, sold separately.

Please note that the listing is for the Williamsburg School Ensemble with Jacket and Petticoat only – the doll and any other accessories are not included. All seam allowances are serged for durability and professional finish. The ensemble is ready to order on an ongoing basis but may take up to three weeks to ship depending on existing inventory. Fabric and trim may vary slightly based on availability. Price includes FREE SHIPPING via first class mail to the United States and Canada. Intended for adult collectors.
